University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff can use these directions to set up their Apple iOS devices to connect to the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

If you have a guest account, Technology Services recommends IllinoisNet Wireless for on-campus use. The VPN is most useful for off-campus use.

Downloading and installing the VPN software

The Cisco AnyConnect VPN software is available for download and installation through the App Store on iTunes:

1. Use the above link to find Cisco AnyConnect in the iTunes App Store or open the iTunes App Store on your device and search using keywords: 'cisco anyconnect.'
   
2. Click 'Free' and then 'Install' to download the app.
   
3. Click 'Open' to open the app on your device.
   


4. After installing, a confirmation window will open, stating that 'Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client extends the VPN capabilities of your device. Do you want to enable this software?'
   
   
   


5. Tap OK.

NOTE: This software may not be compatible with iOS 5 and older versions of iOS. Consult the App Store for compatibility with your device.

Configuring for University use

1. Tap 'Add VPN Connection..' to add a new connection profile.
   
2. Enter the following VPN settings:
   • Description: TechServices VPN
   • Server address: vpn.cites.illinois.edu


3. Click Save.

You have now stored your VPN configuration.

Starting the software

After you've completed installing and configuring the Cisco AnyConnect VPN app, a new AnyConnect icon will be available on your home screen.

Click the icon to launch it.

Logging in

1. In the AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client window that appears:
   1. Under 'Choose a Connection,' select the Tech Services VPN connection.
      
   2. Swipe the AnyConnect VPN switch in the top right corner from Off to On.
2. In the Authentication window, enter the following information:
   
   
   • Username: Your NetID
     (or, if you're a guest, your guest ID)
   • Password: Your Active Directory password
     (or, if you're a guest, your guest password)
   • Group: 1_SplitTunnel_Default
     (Note: This is the most common choice. See About VPN Profiles for information about the alternatives, such as Tunnel All for access to library resources.)

Note: If you want to access Library resources without logging in to the Library Gateway, you should change to the Tunnel All profile.

After your connection is established, use your other applications as needed.

Disconnecting

When you're done using the VPN connection, disconnect it:

1. From the Home screen, click the AnyConnect icon.
   
2. Swipe the AnyConnect VPN switch in the top left corner from On to Off.

LICENSING AND INFRASTRUCTURE REQUIREMENTS:
You must have an active AnyConnect Plus, Apex or VPN Only term/contract to utilize this software. Use is no longer permitted for older Essentials/Premium with Mobile licensing. AnyConnect may never be used with non-Cisco servers.
Trial AnyConnect Apex (ASA) licenses are available for administrators at www.cisco.com/go/license
AnyConnect for iOS requires Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Boot image 8.0(4) or later.
Per App VPN requires ASA 9.3(2) or later (5500-X/ASAv only) with Plus, Apex or VPN Only licensing and a minimum Apple iOS version of 10.x.
